Fujifilm has launched its own Film simulation website. Fuji says that they want people to explore the colour science behind their most famous film ‘looks’ to discover what exactly makes each one special.
The simulation is divided into two parts: the ‘all-around’ and’ individualistic’ types of films. You can click on each type of film within these categories to learn more about its characteristics.

“Like dining at a restaurant where an experienced chef carefully oversees the flavors of each dish, Film Simulations allow you to enjoy the results of extensive expertise without deep photographic knowledge,” says the website.

The films in the ‘All Around’ section exhibit “versatile characteristics widely applicable to a variety of scenarios.” These include Provia and Astia, and in black and white Acros and Mono STD, amongst others.
The more individualistic films cater to a more personal interpretation from the photographer and seek to “match the photographer’s emotions, feelings, subject choice, and purpose to highlight and express the subject’s appeal.” These films include Velvia, Nostalgic Neg, Sepia, and Eterna, among others.
Once you click on a particular film, a new page opens that shows examples of photographs alongside a lengthy description of the film’s characteristics and a chart of the different qualities of the colour, highlights, and shadow tones.

The site also uses sliders to help explain the impact of grain, Color Chrome Effect and Color Chrome FX Blue on your images.
Fujifilm has slowly been killing off some of its filmstocks over the last couple of years. However, if you’re interested in learning more about different film stocks from Fujifilm, this is an interesting simulator. It may well inspire you to try some different looks, particularly if you’re colour-grading videos or even want to take your still photography to new places in post-production.
