daniel_weir4With over 13 million photographs belonging to its collection, The Library Of Congress is one of the most extensive anthologies of images in the world. Many of the royalty free photos in the collection are old, bygone relics from times long ago passed that have been, for the most part, forgotten about. That is until an inventive director and designer by the name Kevin Weir had the notion to take some of the black and white images and breathe new life into them by turning them into some awesome, albiet a little creepy, GIF animations for a project he’s dubbed, The Flux Machine.

While looking through The Library Of Congress Flickr page, Weir looks for images he places his emphasis on great compositions with interesting characters. After spending some time with the images, studying them, he then pulls an idea from his creativity bank and gets to work transforming the image into a simple, yet thought-provoking piece of work which often forces the exploration of the juxtaposition between good and evil, the mystical and the prosaic.

GIF animations were once fairly popular, but Weir says the, when GIFs first came out, the format wasn’t very good. The internet wasn’t as powerful and it limited the amount of files that could be incorporated into a single image. Now, as high-speed internet has become the norm, he’s able to make more complex GIFs without clogging up the internet and draining people’s bandwidth.

Weir has also been able to incorporate and expand on his clever GIF animations by combining the style into his film work, too. Check out this wicked music video Weir created and directed:
