UPDATE: Contest is now closed for entries. Thanks everyone for the great and well constructed submissions. I will update with the winners shortly.
It’s been a long time since we had a healthy contest, one where you challenge your hands as well as your eyes.
The awesome guys over at B&H are sponsoring this awesome contest where we will be giving away a complete set of Westcott Apollo Speedlight set (values $109) along with a Nikon SB700 ($329.95) or a Canon 430EX II ($284), depending on your system. DIYP will be giving all those goodies to the best entry on our Build A Softbox Contest. Of course we could not let B&H carry the load all by themselves, so DIYP is going to chip in with a full set of the DIYP lighting kits line – a Ring Flash and Double Flash Bracket for the two runners up.
This Is How It Works:
Starting with the kick off today, you will have 20 days to enter. Each entry should include two links:
- A picture of a DIY softbox that you built yourself
- A photograph taken using that softbox.
Entries will be judged by the quality of the softbox and the creativity of the photograph.
- You get bonus points for a super creative photograph
- You get bonus points for a super slick construction
- You get bonus points for including a setup shot where we can see your use of lights
- You get bonus points for including a tutorial on how you built the softbox
You can make an entry by submitting a comment in the comments form below. Deadline is June, 20th 2011.
You can submit enries by adding a comment below with links to your softbox and photograph. It can be on your blog, flickr, twitpic, imageshuck it really does not matter where you put it.

- Plenty of ideas can be found on Nick Wheeler’s guide to the best softbox ever.
- You can make a three minutes softbox from an old Fedex box
- You can use foam core to build a Lastolite Ezybox
The Fine Print
- One person, from anywhere in the world, who will submits the best sofbox design and photograph will will the Westcott Apollo Speedlight set and a Nikon SB700 or a Canon 430EX II.
- The two runners up will receive a full set of the DIYP lighting kits line – Ring Flash and bracket and a Double Flash Bracket
- We will take care of shipping – anywhere in the world, you will take care of any local taxes and/or duties
- If I don’t hear back from a winner in three days, we move down the list. Rinse and repeat.
- Participation can not be done with images that are on one of DIYP’s tutorials, you’ll have to either take new pictures or build a new softbox.
